Ever played an overdrive with a mix control? Pretty cool, huh? How many times have you wished that the mix control could be manipulated with your foot? If you’re like us, plenty. And now that Ernie Ball has taken its mastery of foot pedals to the realm of overdrive, we have such a thing. It’s called the Expression Overdrive.

The Expression Overdrive boasts three controls in addition to the footpedal-controlled mix function. The three controls are Drive, Tone and Boost.

The Drive controls how much gain is in the circuit, ranging from light push to crunch city. The Tone control acts as a high-end rolloff so you can tailor it to your pickups or amp.

The Boost control adds “oomph” to the toe-down position of the footpedal. When the mix is fully engaged, adjust the Boost control to provide as much as 6 decibels of boost.

The key thing to remember: there is no bypass switch. Instead, because the footpedal is a mix control, heel-down is bypass, because only clean signal is passed through. Pretty cool!

Unlike other Ernie Ball pedals, the Expression Overdrive is fully enclosed, so you’re not in any danger of getting grime into the pedal’s electrical bits.

It also bears mentioning that the Expression Overdrive is about 66 percent the size of a standard Ernie Ball VPJr, so it won’t hog your whole board.
