The EarthQuaker Devices Grand Orbiter 4-stage phaser pedal serves up a full palette of phasing grooviness that's perfect for guitar — or anything else you'd like to enhance with this classic '70s effect. Grand Orbiter's OTA-based circuit is augmented with a 3-way switch that lets you select between modulation ranges: Rate 1 is slow sweep mode; Rate 2 kills the LFO, letting you use Grand Orbiter as a fixed resonant filter; Rate 3 is fast sweep mode. This third-generation pedal has been updated with flexi-switch relay-based silent switching for improved performance. We've played through quite a few phaser pedals, and the EarthQuaker Devices Grand Orbiter V3 stands out.
Grand Orbiter's circuitry is based around the operational transconductance amplifier, an ultra-stable device considered in electronic engineering circles to be an ideal transistor. EarthQuaker built the circuit with a smart set of controls that gives you the ability to craft and fine-tune the exact effect you're after. The Rate control adjusts the speed of the LFO (the flashing LED gives you a visual indicator, even with the effect bypassed). The Depth control blends the wet signal in with the dry, effectively controlling the intensity of the effect. Grand Orbiter's Sweep control sets the peak frequency of the phased signal: full clockwise, the sweep is vibrant and intense; turning the dial counterclockwise gives you a darker, more laid-back sound. The Resonance knob serves up a broad regeneration palette; at higher settings, it delivers a more resonant tone. The Phase/Vibrato switch even lets you use Grand Orbiter as a true-pitch vibrato. In Vibrato mode, the dry signal is killed, and the Depth control functions as a volume control.
